ISTANBUL (AA) - The Society of Endometriosis&Adenomyosis announced that awareness about chocolate cyst, which affects about 178 million women worldwide and about 2 million women in Turkey, is very low.

Endometriosis, which is more commonly known as chocolate cyst disease, is a common health problem among women worldwide.

The society points out that women do not go to a specialist unless they have excruciating pain or they face fertility problems. The society gave us the following information:

‘It is thought that worldwide 178 million and in our country about 2 million women are affected by this disease. However, both worldwide and in our country people do not know much about it. Symptoms include; menstruation pain, pelvic pain, infertility, chronic fatigue, depression, and menstruation related urination and defecation pain. Unfortunately, many women ignore these symptoms. Especially in adolescent girls ‘menstruation pain’ is thought to be normal and because of this perception diagnosis and treatment are usually delayed.

There are different treatment options, but so far there is no cure to this disease. Medical treatment options include a variety of hormone treatments. Surgery is usually done in laparoscopy technique with the aim of removal of the chocolate cyst and the surrounding scar tissue. With a variety of exercise recommendations and dietary options the aim is to reduce the pain related symptoms of the patients.’

Patients most of the time need a life-long surveillance. The aim of our society is to inform women about endometriosis and reach out to maximum number of women suffering from this disease.
